When Andrés Zúñiga steps onto the stage at Gala de Danza in London, it’s not just another performance—it’s a full-circle moment. Now a rising star with New York City Ballet at just 21 years old, Andrés returns to the very platform that first ignited his dream of becoming a professional dancer. Gala de Danza isn’t just part of his story—it’s where it all began.

“Being part of Gala de Danza is a great honor”
The event, originally founded in Los Cabos, Mexico by Cristina Lyon, aimed to build a dance culture where none existed. “I was in the audience for the very first gala. It was life-changing, honestly.” Back then, he was just a boy watching global dance stars from the seats. Today, he’s one of them.
Since joining NYCB in 2022, Andrés has impressed critics with his classical precision and vibrant stage presence. But being invited back to Gala de Danza —this time in London— feels different. It’s personal. “I danced in the 2018 gala in Los Cabos when they brought it back,” he says. “And now they’ve invited me again—it’s a huge honor.”
In London, Andrés will perform George Balanchine’s “Stars and Stripes“, a bold and festive ballet with the music of John Philip Sousa. Known for its precision and patriotic flair, the piece celebrates American dance tradition. But for Andrés, it means something more:
“It’s festive. It has this energy of celebration. But for me, it also means something deeper.”
As a Mexican dancer building his career abroad, this performance becomes a symbol of cultural exchange and pride.
Though he now dances in the U.S., Andrés carries his roots with pride and intention. His heritage isn’t something he leaves behind—it’s what grounds him and shapes the way he moves through the world. “I’m a Mexican dancer. I grew up in México. I’m developing in the United States, but I’ll always be a Mexican dancer.”
He often hears that Mexican dancers bring a special kind of energy to the stage—an unmistakable joy that resonates with audiences. Andrés agrees. “People have told me, ‘You can see it in you.’” For him, that joy is more than a performance trait; “It’s cultural, emotional, it is identity.” It’s a quiet yet powerful reminder of who he is and where he comes from—something he proudly carries into every role.
For Andrés, Gala de Danza is more than just a performance; it’s a cultural crossroads and a celebration of global artistry. “The mission is to show dance at an international level. Dancers from all over the world come together. It’s inspiring.” It’s this fusion of backgrounds, styles, and stories that makes the event so powerful, offering audiences a rare chance to witness the diversity of the dance world on one stage. For Andrés, being part of that exchange is both an honor and a homecoming.
From a boy in the audience to a dancer in the spotlight, Andrés Zúñiga’s story has come full circle. Join him in London and witness a celebration of movement, culture, and resilience.
Gala de Danza isn’t just a show—it’s a powerful experience. Whether you’re a dance fan or simply curious, come see what happens when passion and purpose meet onstage.
