To celebrate MexiWeek, we spoke to Karla to get to know her a little better:
MexiBrit: How did Mexican Food Memories came about?
Karla: Mexican Food Memories started by accident when I opened an IG account, I started posting pictures of the food I cook at home and people started asking me for the recipe and my husband convinced me to write a food blog and the rest is history.
Mexibrit: You are now running not just personilised classes at yours but also via Zoom, tell us more!
Karla: I love teaching people how to cook Mexican food, I’m very proud of our culture and gastronomy. I really enjoy the person to person cooking classes at my house, I love entertaining, so having people at home and cooking with me is something that comes natural to me. My Mexican cooking classes make me feel like I’m in Mexico, we cook, we sit around my table, we eat and chat about food, just like I would do with my family.
But now with Covid, I had to stop teaching at home, so I organised a Zoom Tortilla workshop, this is something new for me, so I want to see if people like it.
MexiBrit: Where are the best tacos in London? (apart from your kitchen!)
I love eating out and I have eaten in many Mexican places. I’m from the north of Mexico and we love our birria, so the best tacos in London I have ever eaten were from Maria Sabina, unfortunately she closed down.
MexiBrit: What does it mean to you to be Mexican in 2020?
Being Mexican in London in 2020 makes me feel very happy. I’ve experience good vibes during lockdown from the Mexican community in UK. I confirmed that if you do good things and help others, good things will happen to you.
MexiBrit: What makes you homesick?
Some Mexican dishes make me homesick. When I make my mum sopes or my dad’s salsas, I would love to be back in Mexico.
