Meet Mex Art taking part at 2020’s Mexican Christmas Market.
MexArt brings the best Mexican arts and crafts to the UK – in particular the colourful wood-carvings known as “alebrijes” that are made in Oaxaca, and the Huichol bead and yarn art of the Nayarit region.
Our inspiration for MexArt began on a visit to Oaxaca, when we took a private tour to the Popular Art Museum. There we were allowed to see a section closed to the public, where the pieces submitted for a national folk art contest were stored. Discovering all of these incredible treasures by artists from across Mexico made us want to share them with the rest of the world. Sadly, neither our finances nor the security guard would let us do that, but the idea of bringing the best folk art from Mexico remained in our minds.
Since then, we’ve established a strong relationship with selected Oaxacan artists who stand out for their originality and quality of work, and brought their alebrijes to the UK. We’ve also added some Huichol bead and yarn art, and we commission bespoke pieces for clients where designs and colours can be customised to their preferences.
As well as selling online, some of our pieces are on display and available for sale at Mestizo Mexican Market in London.

We’re a “Mexi-Brit” couple, inspired by our travels in Mexico and our encounters with the amazing traditions of art and craftmanship in the different regions. Our favourite Mexican Christmas traditions are Posadas, drinking hot ponche and of course, breaking piñatas! It’s wonderful to be in Mexico over the festive period and see the piñantas everywhere. One very unusual artistic tradition that we would love to see is the “La Noche de los Rábanos” in Oaxaca, where locals gather in the town square to exhibit intricately carved radishes!
