Mexican Mama, from Guadalajara with love

Meet Maira, a passionate and determined young lady who’s been a businesswoman since she left university, when she came to live in London she started to get to know her way around and decided to start her own company, Mexican Mama.

Maira: ‘Like most Mexicans who arrive in the UK there were many things that I missed from home, but the thing I missed most was the food. Although there was Mexican food available here, there were certain flavours that I simply couldn’t find.  So when I decided to stay in Britain I wanted to find a way to bring my favourite products here, to not only enjoy myself but to share with my new friends and family and Mexican Mama was born!’

She now runs here small business that employs 3 people in a Peckham warehouse, always in a look out for new and innovative products, she now imports a huge variety and products and there are more to come with the imminent arrival of her next container in UK shores.

Some of her most popular products include dried chillies, Sonia Salsas, Guadalajara’s most famous refried beans Garibaldi, a range of Agua frescas powder that are 100% natural and spicy Mexican sweets! She was also just launched two recipe boxes with everything you need to make pozole and another one for vegetarians with sopes and huaraches with a recipe included.

Mexibrit: What is your favourite thing about London or the City where you live?

Maira: Favourite Mexican places in the UK ? Too many to name!  I love finding new Mexican restaurants all over the country and particularly enjoy the many Mexican themed events that take place in London (I have missed those this year).

Mexibrit: What does it mean to you to be Mexican in 2020?

Maira: Like every year, being Mexican in 2020 means being proud of my country and culture and enjoying sharing that with my adopted home.  This year however it means a lot more.  With the current situation and being unable to see friends and family back home, being a Mexican in the UK means coming together with others in the same situation and helping each other through this time ensuring we have a little piece of Mexico here for all of us!

Mexibrit: What makes you homesick the most…

Maira: Weather, Friends and Family
