Mini Piñatas: Craft, Celebrate & Learn Spanish

Families visiting Mexico Vivo Fest can start the day with a joyful Mexican craft workshop for children inspired by the colourful tradition of piñatas.
In this hands-on session, children create their own mini piñata using paper cups, tissue paper and decorations while learning simple Spanish words such as colores, fiesta, arriba and abajo. The activity blends creativity, language and Mexican cultural traditions, making it an engaging introduction to Spanish for young learners.
Each child leaves with their handmade piñata and new vocabulary to share at home.

Matchboxes to Burn Injustice

Inspired by the iconic Mexican La Imperial matchboxes, this contemporary art workshop explores how visual symbols shape identity and social narratives.
Participants will transform matchboxes through drawing, collage and text, creating new archetypes such as La Feminista, El Migrante, La Madre Buscadora and La Resistencia. Each decorated matchbox becomes a symbolic spark reflecting themes of migration, feminist movements and social resilience.
This workshop blends Mexican visual culture with contemporary political reflection, creating a powerful creative space within the festival.

Resistance Tin Hearts – Mexican Folk Art Workshop

Discover the tradition of Mexican milagros and tin folk art in this creative workshop exploring the repujado metal embossing technique.
Participants will create their own embossed tin heart, inspired by traditional devotional objects used across Mexico. Each heart can include a phrase inspired by the spirit of Mexico Vivo Fest: community, resilience, cultural pride and collective strength.
These handcrafted objects become contemporary symbols celebrating identity and solidarity through Mexican craft traditions.

Mexican Lettering Workshop – Design Your Own Rótulo

Mexican rótulos are iconic hand-painted signs seen across markets, food stalls and neighbourhood shops throughout Mexico.
In this creative workshop participants will learn about the history and cultural significance of Mexican street letteringbefore designing their own colourful rótulo poster inspired by a dance event, personal project or imagined celebration.
This workshop offers a unique introduction to one of Mexico’s most distinctive vernacular art forms.

End the day with a special screening of El Camino de Cavita, exploring chef Adriana Cavita’s culinary journey through Mexico and the cultural stories behind the country’s rich gastronomic traditions.

The session also offers a behind-the-scenes look at the chillies used in salsa macha and mole, revealing how these ingredients transform when blended with nuts, seeds and spices.

In this colourful craft workshop, participants will create their own Mexican-inspired flower headband using vibrant paper flowers. Inspired by traditional dancers, Mexican festivals and the iconic style of Frida Kahlo, this workshop celebrates creativity and heritage.
Allegro Adagio – Bilingual Storytelling & Creative Collage for Children

This joyful Spanish–English storytelling workshop invites children to explore creativity through the story Allegro Adagio.
The session begins with a live reading by the author, followed by a guided creative activity where children create their own collage artwork inspired by the book’s handmade illustrations.
The story follows a curious dragonfly who meets artists and makers along the way, encouraging children to celebrate their unique talents and imagination.
Ages: 3–99 (children must be accompanied by a parent)
