Sweet Nibble: A Taste of Home with Araceli Maldonado
Meet the woman behind one of London’s most beloved Mexican bakeries – and find out what she’s bringing to Mexico Vivo Fest.
When Araceli Maldonado moved from Mexico City to London in 2011, she never imagined that baking would become such a central part of her life. What began as a way to share homemade treats with friends quickly blossomed into Sweet Nibble – an online bakery dedicated to bringing the comforting flavours of Mexican pan dulce to homes across the UK.
“I started baking almost by accident,” Araceli says with a smile. “But it felt right. Like I was bringing a little piece of home to the people around me.” From the soft, sugar-dusted conchas to the indulgent Tres Leches cake, Sweet Nibble is more than just a bakery – it’s a heartfelt tribute to heritage, family, and flavour.
When asked about her favourite thing about living in London, Araceli doesn’t hesitate. “It’s the mix of everything – peaceful parks, brilliant museums, and the incredible diversity you find at food markets and festivals. That’s where London really comes alive.”
Unsurprisingly, she also has a few favourite taco spots: “Mexclub London and 1910 Restaurant – they get it right. You can tell they care about the ingredients and the experience. That’s something I really respect, because that’s what we aim for at Sweet Nibble too.”
“To me, it’s about keeping our traditions alive while still moving forward,” Araceli shares. “We have such a beautiful culture, filled with celebrations, food, and strong family values. Being Mexican today means sharing that joy and resilience with the world – and baking is my way of doing that.”
Of course, homesickness creeps in at times. “I miss the warmth – not just the sun, but the warmth of being surrounded by family and friends. But the community we’ve built here, and sharing Mexico through Sweet Nibble, helps close that distance.”
Sweet Nibble is proud to be part of Mexico Vivo Fest this year, bringing the flavour of tradition to the heart of London. Visitors can expect all the favourites – conchas, Tres Leches, and Impossible cake – alongside a new special treat: Garibaldi bread.
“It’s a new one for us,” Araceli says. “A light, sweet cake with apricot – perfect for a celebration like this. We hope people love it as much as we do.”
So, what’s next for Sweet Nibble? “To keep baking with heart,” Araceli says simply. “To keep learning, growing, and staying connected to our customers. It’s more than just a business – it’s about sharing a piece of home, one bite at a time.”
